Charity Launches Advent Calendar to Celebrate Festive Season

The Torbay Community Development Trust (TCDT) is starting the festive season with an advent calendar packed with examples of how Torbay’s communities are making a positive contribution to life in the Bay.

The Trust is spreading Christmas cheer as it celebrates the fundraising achievements, community group projects and volunteering endeavours of the last year, which they hope will add some early sparkle to the yuletide period.

With a community-themed countdown to Christmas, the TCDT has a fun fact behind every calendar window and is providing more than the usual piece of chocolate. Everyone who opens a calendar window and enters their email address will be added to a prize draw for a meal for two at The Chelston Manor.

“We wanted to showcase the achievements of Torbay’s community organisations” said Simon Sherbersky, Lead Officer of the Torbay Community Development Trust.

“We work with so many wonderful community groups in the Bay and they go above and beyond to make it a better place to live, so it seems only right that we share these accomplishments with everyone.

“We open doors for these groups through supporting fundraising endeavours, volunteer recruitment and volunteer management, so we thought what better way to do this than to ask residents to open advent calendar doors all through December.

“We hope everyone enjoys opening each window and would like to thank The Chelston Manor for their generous donation of a meal for two, and I wish everyone luck in the prize draw.”

It’s been a busy time for the TCDT as the Trust processed over 1,300 volunteer application and raised over £3 million in funding bids for community groups. This year Ourbus also launched in Torbay, this is a community-led bus service running the number 60/61 bus route that winds through Paignton, Preston and Torquay and carries 5,000 passengers a month.

The Ageing Well Torbay programme held its third festival this year at Lupton House which saw a staggering 1,400 people attend. The festival is run by a steering group of local older people and is a celebration of ageing well in the Bay.

All of these facts and more will be showcased through the advent calendar in the run up to Christmas.

The calendar will go live on 1 December and can be found at: https://torbaycdt.wixsite.com/advent2017 or follow the Torbay Community Development Trust on Twitter and Facebook to see each day’s advent window.
