If you’re feeling unwell this Bank Holiday weekend, remember your local pharmacist is on hand to help and can save you a long wait in your local emergency department.
Many people are unaware of the wide range of services available from their local pharmacist and spend time waiting unnecessarily for a GP appointment, minor injury unit or even in busy hospital emergency departments.
Pharmacist Jackie Lewis of Lewis Pharmacy in Exmouth said: “Whether it’s sunburn, a bite or sting or an upset stomach, we’re on hand throughout the bank holiday, as always. We can support you with many minor conditions including urinary tract infections, rashes and earaches.
“By using your local pharmacist appropriately and leaving emergency departments for emergencies you can save yourself a long wait and do your bit to reduce pressure on health services.”
Local pharmacies can provide expert advice and a fast route to medication for many minor ailments. This includes:
• Aches and pains
• Sore throats, coughs, colds and flu
• Earache
• Cystitis
• Skin rashes
• Teething
• Conjunctivitis and sore eyes
Pharmacists can also access basic information about a patient’s health and medication if the patient gives them permission to view their Summary Health Record.
If the patient gives their consent, the majority of pharmacists can view their repeat medication online as well as acute medication issued in the last 12 months. This is particularly helpful if a patient runs out of medication.

Advice on common childhood illnesses can be found on the HANDi paediatric app and parents from Devon are being urged to download the app to access quick and convenient advice.
For more serious illness or injury people can use NHS 111 online or by phone for advice and if you need to be seen in a Minor Injuries Unit or Emergency Department, 111 will arrange this directly for you.
