A major investment of £350,000 has seen Dartmouth Leisure Centre transformed over the past 18 months and the works are now complete. During this time, the centre has welcomed a brand-new indoor swimming pool and wet change area, plus a refurbished gym packed with new kit. Already proving a hit with existing members, the local community is being invited to snap up a free day pass to try out the new facilities for themselves.
The investment project, which breathes new life into Dartmouth’s much-loved leisure centre, was led by Fusion Lifestyle, the UK’s leading sports and leisure charity. Starting with a brand-new swimming pool and wet change facilities in 2017, the work has also seen a new link corridor added between the wet and dry sides of the centre to make for easier access to facilities. The latest phase of work is now complete, which involved a total refurbishment of the gym and kitting it out with topof-the-range gym equipment.
As a result of the works, Dartmouth Leisure Centre now boasts a wide variety of ways for the whole community to get active, with its new indoor pool area placing a focus on a range of exciting waterbased activities. Swim Fit – a new swim session designed to improve adult swimmers’ technique and fitness, has been a popular addition to the class timetable, which joins the regular schedule of Swim School classes, which provides swimming lessons to all ages.
The Dartmouth Pool Trust and Fusion Lifestyle have also teamed up to set up new initiative, Swim 4 Health – working with local doctors practices to encourage people to take up swimming in order to benefit their health – and the new pool facilities have continuously attracted a number of new swimmers looking to improve their fitness and wellbeing since it opened.
The work at Dartmouth forms part of a multi-million-pound investment to improve six Devon leisure centres, undertaken by Fusion Lifestyle, South Hams District Council and West Devon Borough Council. As part of a three year-programme, other locations benefitting from investment include; Ivybridge Leisure Centre, Quayside Leisure Centre (Kingsbridge), Meadowlands (Tavistock), Totnes Pavilion and Parklands Leisure Centre (Okehampton).
David Ling, Business Manager at Fusion Lifestyle said: “The completion of the work at Dartmouth Leisure Centre is a major milestone, which will significantly enhance the experience for our customers and those in the local area. We are committed to nurturing and maintaining local sports and leisure facilities, which includes making a serious investment in their improvement and longterm upkeep.
“We must also add our thanks to the tireless dedication of the Dartmouth Pool Trust for all their work to enable their local community to receive a pool. This is a brilliant facility and the recent investment will ensure this popular leisure centre can be enjoyed for years to come by the community.”
Cllr Hilary Bastone, Executive Member for Customer First at South Hams District Council, said: “I’m delighted to see the completion of these works at Dartmouth. The new equipment in the gym means that more people than ever before can try out a wide range of fitness equipment and find something that suits them.”
Matt Green, General Manager at Dartmouth Leisure Centre, added: “Our new facilities have been really popular with our existing members, and we would encourage everyone to visit for themselves. Our swim sessions, for adults and children, have been a big success, teaching valuable skills and helping to boost fitness. We are thrilled to now also have a refurbished, state-of-the-art gym; the centre really does have something for everyone.”
