Teignbridge District Council has demonstrated its commitment to supporting current and ex-Armed Forces personnel who live locally by signing The Armed Forces Covenant.

Council Chairman, Cllr Richard Keeling signed the Covenant which says: “We the undersigned agree to work and act together to honour the Armed Forces Covenant and support the Armed Forces Community. We recognise the value Serving Personnel (Regular & Reserve), Cadets, Veterans and military families contribute to our council, business, charity and community”.

Joining Cllr Keeling in signing the Covenant on behalf of the armed forces was Lt Col Karl Parfitt TD RE; on behalf of the Royal British Legion, Brian Hall MBE; on behalf of business was Newton Abbot Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee Member Steve Gaskill; and on behalf of the voluntary sector was Teignbridge CVS Chief Officer Sue Wroe.

Teignbridge’s Portfolio Holder for Housing Cllr Martin Wrigley and Cllr David Cox also attended the signing ceremony.

Among the commitments made by the Council in signing the Covenant are:

Promoting the fact that we are an armed forces friendly organisation
Seeking to support the employment of veterans young and old
Striving to support the employment of Service spouses and partners
Seeking to support our employees who choose to be members of the Reserve
Offering support to our local cadets
Aiming to actively participate in Armed Forces Day
Encouraging and supporting employee fundraising for Service Charities.

Cllr Keeling said: “This is an important step by the Council which underlines our joint commitment with businesses and voluntary groups to do everything possible to promote greater understanding and awareness of the needs of the armed forces community in Teignbridge.

“As a council we are developing a programme of initiatives to boost support across the District and in signing the covenant we are also reaffirming its support for employees as reservists and veterans.”
