Former chair of Teignbridge District Council and Armed Forces Covenant Champion Cllr Richard Keeling has called on local people to mark the annual Remembrance Day this year, despite the Covid- 19 restrictions preventing many Remembrance events taking place.
He is encouraging residents to remember those who sacrificed so much and gave their lives for this country by observing the Two Minute Silence in their homes or on their doorsteps.
And he highlighted the live joint streaming from 11am on Sunday 8 November on the Facebook pages of Exeter Cathedral, Exeter City Council and Devon County Council of the traditional Exeter and County Remembrance Sunday Services.
“By taking part in remote and socially distanced Remembrance activity,” said Cllr Keeling, “we can acknowledge the sacrifices made and remind everyone of the importance of supporting our veterans in these challenging times.”
Last year, the Council signed the Armed Forces Covenant which pledges, ‘to acknowledge and understand that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they served with their lives.’
In pursuit of this goal, the Council backs efforts to support homeless veterans, to provide the advice and support they need and to encourage businesses to employ veterans young or old, their partners and spouses. As well as encouraging support for veterans’ charities, the Council disregards War Disability Pensions and War Widows Pension when calculating council tax reduction for veterans and their families.
Cllr Keeling thanked all the volunteers who work throughout the year for a range of charities to support veterans and others in need.
