Did you know that the UK uses approximately 15 million plastic bottles every day? It is estimated that approximately 70% of all plastic is used for ‘single use’ items such as bottles, food packaging and drinking straws. If we continue on this track, it is estimated that the world’s oceans will contain more plastic weight than fish by 2050. Despite increased efforts in recycling, this addiction is having a devastating impact on biodiversity.
Pollution is one of the biggest global killers, affecting over 100 million people. What are we doing about it? The UK has signed up to The Paris Climate Agreement and The Lisbon Treaty. These are worldwide commitments dreamt up by politicians and will take years to make an impact. However, a new and exciting one day education festival called EdFest SouthWest in association with The Element Network, believes we need to act now. Festival Director, Dr Kellyanne Boyce says “The only way the world will become a less polluted and better place for our children in the future, is through all of us taking responsibility for a cleaner and healthier climate. The festival aims to educate, engage and inspire all attendees in the important areas of our environment, conservation and sustainability”.
EdFest SouthWest has signed up some of the region’s leading and most interesting organisations and speakers who will be providing a vast array of interesting content, engaging workshops and fun-filled activities. Boyce goes on to say “The festival has been designed to inspire teachers, students and families in the many ways they can get involved in protecting our planet both in the classroom and at home”.
In addition to the day’s events, EdFest are excited to announce their annual ‘In Your Element’ children’s competition. They are looking for EdFest’s first youth ambassador. If you are a young environmentalist with a passion for protecting our planet and would love the opportunity to develop your passion further within a thriving and supportive school environment, EdFest would love to hear from you. The award is going to give the lucky winner a school scholarship to ‘The Element School’ (Formerly Tower House), plus an annual package to help them grow and develop their passion.
