New research has revealed the UK cities with the highest percentage of annual waste recycled, with Oxford topping the list.
The study, conducted by sustainable toilet roll subscription service Oceans, aimed to find the most eco-friendly UK city, with one metric being the annual percentage of waste recycled.
Oxford leads the rankings with an impressive 57% of its annual waste being recycled. This high recycling rate underscores the city’s commitment to responsibly and sustainably disposing of waste.
Following closely are Cheltenham and Gloucester, with both cities achieving a 53% recycling rate.
Exeter, Worthing, Crawley, and Telford also demonstrate robust recycling efforts, each recycling 52% of their annual waste.
Watford ranks next and is the only other location on the list recycling at least half their annual waste, with a figure of 50%.
Reading and Blackpool round out the top cities, each with a 45% recycling rate. Warrington follows closely with 44%, reflecting the town’s steady progress in enhancing its recycling efforts.
Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for Oceans said: “This study highlights the cities that are making significant strides in waste recycling.
“The ability to effectively manage and recycle waste is crucial for reducing environmental impact and moving towards a more sustainable future. Cities like Oxford and Cheltenham are setting a strong example, but there is always room for improvement across the UK.
“As the country continues to push towards greater environmental responsibility, the importance of robust recycling programs cannot be overstated. We hope these findings highlight which areas need to improve in this regard and prompt action from governing bodies to implement the facilities needed to divert as much waste as possible away from landfill sites.”
