Five South Devon Schools closed over Coronavirus fears

There are five schools in South Devon closed today due to concerns over the Coronavirus.

One school in South Hams and four schools in Torbay have been closed as a precautionary measure.

Churston Ferrers Grammar School was the first to announce its closure this morning following advice from Public Health England.

Galmpton Primary School in Brixham, Collaton St Mary in Paignton, Berry Pomeroy Primary in Totnes, Brixham C of E Primary school also announced they would be closing for the day.

An email to parents and carers of Churston Ferrers Grammar School Students said:
“Dear All

“Following a call late last night from Public Health England with regard to a potential case of COVID-19 at Churston, we are letting you know that the school will be closed for all staff and students today as a precautionary measure.

“You will, of course, have many questions and we will be posting updates during the day via the website and our In-touch communication system.

“We understand that this will be hugely inconvenient but once again, I must urge you not to start your travel plans this morning.

“We will back in touch shortly.”

Over 11,000 people in the UK have been tested with 36 people confirmed as having the virus.
