Focus on: Punk Against Poverty

Punk Against Poverty was started in January 2020. Punk is fun, fresh and determined to make a difference to the lives of people in Torbay struggling with poverty.

Punk’s grassroots approach and neon pink colour scheme demonstrates that Punk are not afraid to be different in their approach and are always first to think outside the box.

Punk have a network of ten Punk Pantries, mini food banks located across Torbay. These pantries are accessible 24/7 and are designed to enable and encourage the local community to help each other. Those who have food to spare can simply pop it in a pantry, and those in need of food can take it. Sadly Punk have found they do not get enough donations of food to keep up with demand from those in need of it, so they regularly fill the pantries with food to help keep up with the overwhelming need.

Punk are also home to Torbays Free School Uniform bank. Here unwanted uniform can be donated and given to families who have found themselves unable to afford the high costs of uniform. Punk regularly fundraise to purchase uniform & school shoes and to cover the overheads of the uniform bank which they’ve found has been in demand all year around.

In June 2020 Punk opened its charity shop, Punk Emporium. Set up as a way to fund their projects, Punk Emporium is filled to the brim with new and preloved clothes of all styles including vintage, designer and high street, all for sale at massively under their retail value.

Recycling clothes, recycling uniform and rehoming surplus food not only help the people of Torbay but also show the eco friendly values at Punks heart.

Punk is always looking for new volunteers to join their team. Whether it’s delivering to pantries, serving customers in the shop, helping with social media, fundraising or getting stuck into ironing mountain there’s a role to suit everyone in Team Punk.

Anyone wishing to find out more about volunteering can contact Punk via email on punkapcic@gmail.com

Punk are in need of funds to help continue their work. Donations on a one off or monthly basis can be made here http://www.ko-fi.com/punkcic

Punk Emporium is located at 97 Union Street, Torquay opposite McDonald’s and is open Monday to Saturday 10am-4pm
