Residents in Torbay are once again being offered free tree whips thanks to a partnership between Torbay Council, SWISCo and Devon Wildlife Trust.
The one-off giveaway – which will be done on a first come, first served basis – is part of the Saving Devon’s Treescapes project which was launched due to promote tree planting due to the devastating impact Ash Dieback is expected to have on the landscape over the next few years.
Species such as Crab apple, Wild cherry, Rowan, Hazel, Birch, Goat willow, Elder, Hawthorn and Oak will be given away. Residents will be able to collect the free trees from either the Recycling Centre in Tor Park Road, Paignton, or from Oldway Gardens. Please only plant trees within your own property.
How to get your free tree
Book a slot at the Recycling Centre – Trees will be available at Torbay Recycling Centre – if you book a slot, when you turn up at the Recycling Centre please mention to a SWISCo staff member when you arrive that you would like one of the trees.
The last day of this tree offer is Friday 25 March but there is a limited supply of trees on a first come first served basis. You can book a slot via the council’s webpage.
Collect a tree from Oldway Gardens – There will also be a tree giveaway at Oldway Gardens in April and further details of this will be published nearer the time.
Councillor Mike Morey, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Environment and Culture for Torbay Council, said: “We are pleased to support this scheme along with Devon Wildlife Trust.
“We are committed to tackling climate change and reducing our carbon footprint and more tree planting is a key part of this, as outlined in our proposed new Carbon Neutral Action Plan.
“So why not take this opportunity to get a free tree and do your bit to tackle climate change.”
Torbay Council and SWISCo will update on their social media channels and website once all the trees in the offer have gone.
Saving Devon’s Treescapes is led by Devon Wildlife Trust on behalf of the Devon Ash Dieback Resilience Forum. It’s a partnership project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund as well as other funders. Torbay Council is a key partner of the project.
