On Sunday 14 July, teams in up to 21 authentic Dragon Boats will be taking over the River Dart in The Totnes Dragon Boat Challenge. Event organisers, Totnes Rotary Club have selected Rowcroft Hospice and Children’s Hospice South West as headline charities.

Dragon Boat racing caters for people of all shapes, sizes and levels of fitness. No previous experience is required to take part, just plenty of team spirit and enthusiasm! There is plenty of time to get a team together and guarantee a place on the start line. Spectators can also enjoy a day of fun with all-day entertainment shore-side at Longmarsh with food stalls, drinks tents and fun for the kids.

Community board members sought to steer £20million 10-year fund to shape Torquay’s future

Organiser, Geoffrey Hyde from the Totnes Rotary club said: “Rowcroft was selected as a headline charity because they are such a worthy cause. Local communities form the bedrock of support for those amongst us who find themselves in need of the vital services that our local charities provide. What better way of saying ’thank you’ than supporting a fun event that both highlights the vital work undertaken by charities, but
also gives local people the chance to enjoy themselves.”

Geoffrey continues: “To anyone thinking about holding a fundraising event for Rowcroft? Don’t
think about it, DO IT! A fundraising event for Rowcroft is one of those vital ‘community links’, that can bring together those in the community who on the one hand have the ability to get involved raising funds, with those who are in need of such vital help.”

Last year it cost £7.8 million to provide Rowcroft’s services. As an independent charity, more than 70% of its funding comes from the incredible generosity of local people, without whom Rowcroft would not be able to fund its service.

Rowcroft Community Fundraising Manager, Alison Upton said: “Every summer we are so overwhelmed with the amazing fundraising support we see from the community. Enter a team to help support the ongoing care Rowcroft Hospice provides for people living with life-limiting illnesses in South Devon. “

To sign up a team today visit www.totnesdragonboats.co.uk , minimum sign up age is 18; Teams of ten paddlers plus a drummer can enter the race for a cost of £400. Dragon boats, paddles, drums and safety gear are all provided.

All team members have to do is turn up on the day.
