It is thought that the offenders are following home the business owners and then returning to enter and steal from the property whilst the owner is at work.

Teignmouth and Dawlish Neighbourhood Police said on Social media: “In the past few days, there have been dwelling burglaries in both Paignton and Teignmouth at home addresses of Chinese Restaurant and take-away owners. There is an inference that the offenders are observing the restaurants and take-away outlets at closing time and following the owners back to their home addresses. Once the offenders are aware of the home addresses they will retreat and return when they know that the occupants are committed at work and return to burgle the house.

“Historically, owners of Indian restaurants and take-aways have also been targeted using these methods.

“The offenders are targeting jewellery, cash and safes. Entry is made at the rear of the property often going through neighbours gardens to gain access.

“Please be vigilant when leaving your businesses and ensure you’re not being followed. If you have any suspicions, then please call the Police immediately noting registrations numbers of any suspicious vehicles.

“Do not keep high amounts of cash or valuable jewellery in your home address.”
