In celebration of the 80th anniversary of VE Day last week, care teams from home care provider Bluebird Care across Devon pulled out all the stops to honour the wartime generation with a series of heart-warming tributes and gatherings.
Across Exeter and Exmouth, the Care Professionals made it their mission to ensure that every customer, no matter where they lived or how they received care, could be part of the commemorations. Homes and community spaces were transformed with Union Jack bunting, wartime memorabilia, and the sounds of 1940s music drifting through the air, setting the tone for the day of remembrance.
The day’s celebrations included singalongs, reminiscence sessions, tea and cake, and even the care team donning authentic 1940s-style outfits. The Care Professionals thoughtfully created displays featuring ration books, wartime recipes, and family treasures, prompting moving conversations between the care teams and the customers. One of them recalled: “I remember dancing in the street with my sisters. Everyone was so happy it was finally over.”
The care team also took the time to sit and listen as customers shared their memories of the war and VE Day. Many were young adults or children when the war ended, and their stories painted a vivid picture.
Will Flint, Owner of Bluebird Care North, East & West Devon, said:
“Our customers have lived through extraordinary times, and VE Day gives us a meaningful way to honour their stories. It’s a privilege to hear about their lives and to create moments that celebrate their strength and the community we all share.”
The commemorations were not only a chance to look back, but also a reminder of the values that connect us across generations.
Operations Director at Bluebird Care North, East & West Devon, Sharon Wilkinson, added:
“Eighty years on, VE Day remains a powerful reminder of the strength, sacrifice, and unity shown by an entire generation. Their stories continue to inspire us, and it’s a privilege to mark this milestone alongside them, ensuring their contributions are never forgotten.”
