Giovanna Fletcher shares candid stories of new motherhood in brand new podcast episode with Devon-based business The Positive Birth Company.
Jungle queen, author, actress, TV presenter and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher has swapped to the other side of the microphone to share some refreshingly relatable moments from her life as a new mum, appearing as a guest in the final episode of Devon-based BCorp business The Positive Birth Company’s first series of their brand new Up The Duff podcast.
In the episode, titled Blood, Sweat and Tears, the star shared a snapshot of raw and real moments of her life as a new mum, in the hope it would reassure other new mothers who were listening. Anecdotes included talking about postpartum blood loss, the early days of breastfeeding and the tumultuous range of emotions that can come after having a baby.
“The day after having Buzz, I remember thinking what on earth is happening. And then being very aware of a sensation like birth,” said Giovanna. “And I waited and this massive blood clot appeared – I called Tom to show him what had come out of me, I was so shocked, I’d never seen anything like it before!”
Postpartum bleeding, also known as lochia, is very common and can last up to six weeks after birth. “It’s important to know that you actually get that postnatal bleeding whether you’ve given birth vaginally or by cesarean,” explained The Positive Birth Company founder and host of Up The Duff podcast Siobhan Miller, who lives in Torquay with her family. “So even if you’ve given birth via cesarean you’re still going to have that blood loss which is coming. It’s not from a tear or a wound, it’s coming from your uterus. If the amount of blood loss is something you’re worried about, or you experience a particularly large clot, you should always speak to your doctor or midwife who can advise you. But you should know that postnatal bleeding is absolutely a part of post-birth recovery, despite it being a topic we don’t hear about very much.”
The first series of Up The Duff has tackled other subjects previously shrouded in stigma too, including pooing during labour, sex during and after pregnancy, the weird and wonderful body changes that occur during and after pregnancy, postnatal incontinence, and more. The podcast series, sponsored by Elvie, has reached number two on Apple Podcasts’ Kids and Family chart and has been downloaded thousands of times already.
