Local youth station wins big in national radio awards

Torbay radio station Ocean Youth Radio has won Gold in the national awards for the best radio and podcasts made by under 18s, organised by The Radio Academy.

The Young Audio Awards – which reward young people with a passion for making audio, and are supported by the BBC and commercial radio – were presented last Friday, and Ocean Youth picked up the gong for Best Achievement in the Community.

The awards were presented by BBC Radio 1’s Jordan North and KISS FM’s Tyler West, and Ocean Youth received their trophy in a surprise appearance at the station headquarters by KISS and Hits Radio presenter Jordan Lee.

Kate Rudman, Organiser at Ocean Youth Radio, said: “We are so delighted that yet again our young producers at Ocean Youth Radio have been recognised for their talent, creativity and commitment. They have put Torbay on the map AGAIN! Our young people have not all had the easiest ride which makes their achievement even the more remarkable. Ocean Youth will soon be on local DAB so this recognition will help to grow listeners. The station is all about giving young people opportunities: to speak out about what’s important to them, be more connected and share their love for music. ”

Their prize will now include a 1-hour radio show on national station Fun Kids, plus opportunities organised by the Radio Academy to learn more about a career in the industry.

Sam Bailey, Managing Director of The Radio Academy, said: “These awards are a fantastic opportunity for young people across the UK to be recognised for the hugely creative work they do with audio – one of the most accessible forms of media you can imagine. At The Radio Academy, we love to recognise kids starting up their own school radio shows or bedroom podcasts – and Ocean Youth is an example of one of the best out there. Congratulations Ocean Youth!”
