Loo with a view: Toilets up for lease

Torbay Council has put two former toilet blocks up for lease as the council continues to progress with its Public Toilet Investment plan.

The aim of the plan is to generate income that can be reinvested into local services as funding for local councils continues to decrease.

The two prime sites, one at Corbyn Head in Torquay and Preston Beach in Paignton, have great views of the Bay and will make stunning locations for either a café, bar or restaurant. The new development would keep to the existing building footprint.

Torbay Council is being flexible in its approach to the sites and really welcomes ideas on how they can be best used. The Council will likely carry out the development but will also consider development of the site by the tenant.

Bettesworths have been instructed by the council to advertise these sites and they are inviting initial ‘expressions of interest’ to be submitted by 9 October 2020.

Cllr Swithin Long, Torbay Council Cabinet Member for Housing, Regeneration and Tourism, said: “Both of these sites are in fantastic locations in Torbay and we welcome anyone who is interested to submit their proposal.

“This has been one of our most challenging years financially and follows years of austerity– this was the case before COVID-19 struck but even more so now, so we really have to think creatively to both save money and generate investment.

“Our Public Toilet Investment plan, which is now into its third year, demonstrates that we are having to do things completely differently now.

“These particular sites will really complement the range of other exciting regeneration projects that are taking place across the Bay. Together, with partners, we are encouraging investment and regeneration, which will support the local economy now and in future.”
