Elected Torbay Mayor Gordon Oliver got a close look at an eye-catching opticians store and its local investment when it celebrated its first year of success.
The Specsavers store in Sainsbury’s at the Willows, Torquay, has proved a huge hit since opening a year ago, with thousands of customers getting glasses and sight-saving advice from the 12 trained staff.
The store also works with the NHS to provide eye tests, hearing assessments and digital hearing aids.
Mr Oliver says: ‘I’m really pleased to see a store doing so well here in Torbay. It is helping many, many local customers, and is investing in local jobs and people’s careers.
‘This is exactly the sort of success story we love here in the Bay – helping local people and the local economy.
‘I congratulate the store and its staff on reaching their first anniversary, and I have no doubt that their professionalism and help for our community will see them reach many more landmarks in the future.’
When Mr Oliver was given a guided tour of the Willows store, he heard about some of the sight-saving diagnosis the staff have given during the past 12 months.
Mr Oliver also saw the latest high-tech machinery available to assess and treat customers, including one of only three 3D Optical Coherence Tomography machines in the South West for retinal imaging and analysis.
The Willows store complements another Torquay Specsavers, based in the town centre.
Simon Simmonds, Specsavers store director for both stores, says: ‘We were delighted to have the Mayor here for our first anniversary to see the wide range of work we do.
‘We were also able to discuss how employing local people and investing in the future of Torbay has always been very important to us.
‘We’re very proud of the work we do here, from providing new glasses for people to using our hospital-grade technology to give a 3D scan of the eye.
‘Thanks to this technology, we are able to identify potentially sight-threatening conditions much earlier than previously thought, and we will continue to invest in these technologies for years to come.’
