Councillor Swithin Long, Torbay Council Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration, Tourism and Housing, said: “As part of Torbay’s Economic Strategy, TDA has commissioned this project to increase skill levels and readiness for work. It will support other projects, such as the Jobs Fair and Apprenticeships Fair, to support people with securing a job and remaining in sustainable employment. By improving readiness for work in Torbay we are looking to meet the needs of local employers in our key sectors.”

Anybody who lives in Torbay and is out of work is eligible to enter the programme, however activity will be delivered in Torbay’s most disadvantaged areas first. Barton in Watcombe, Kings Ash and Collaton St Mary, Ellacombe, Roundham with Hyde, Tormohun and Wellswood will be some of the areas to receive the support.

The project will focus specifically on Torbay’s four key sectors – Tourism, Care, Construction and Hi-Tech – to meet the skills needs of local employers. The programme will partner with local employers to enable work placements and help fill their vacancies. It is also an exciting opportunity for employers to invest in the community and local workforce.

Ed Atter, Chief Executive of Motiv-8, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract to support unemployed people across Torbay and help them back into work. We’re confident we can make a real difference over the two years of the Ready for Work scheme and we’ll be out in the communities connecting unemployed people with local employers looking to recruit.”

Motiv-8 is an empowering coach-mentoring organisation delivering life changing, specialist development programmes and one to one coaching throughout England. They have a proven track record in helping people towards and into employment, further education or training. Based in Exeter, Motiv-8 have a thorough understanding of Torbay and the issues the communities are facing.

Support will include 1-2-1 coaching sessions, five day foundation courses, sector route ways, work placement’s and in work support.
Ready for Work will be a two year project, which starts later this month, aiming to get 77 people into paid employment.
