With a decision expected imminently from the Government, an online petition demanding the £350m project to rebuild Torbay Hospital goes ahead has been signed by nearly 1,000 residents.
Since being launched by the bay’s former MP Kevin Foster, 948 residents have already signed up, with more doing so every day, all demanding promises to rebuild Torbay hospital are kept. Now with speculation a decision may be made as part of Wednesday’s Budget, Kevin is launching a final push to get signature numbers over 1,000.
The Building a Brighter Future project for Torbay Hospital would be the biggest single investment in South Devon’s healthcare services since the NHS was founded in 1948. Whilst the previous Conservative Government has committed to deliver it, in September Health Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed in writing he had placed it on a list of projects “under review”.
Recent years have seen significant capital investment into Torbay’s NHS, including the new Acute Medical Unit, Endoscopy Suite, and the new Day Surgery Unit. Yet the Building a Brighter Future Project was a vital part of Torbay Hospital’s future, including a new ward block to replace buildings from the 1920s and an upgrade to many other facilities. Local health campaigners are keen
Kevin Foster said: “As decision day on Torbay’s vital hospital rebuild project nears, I would urge all residents to back the petition, sending a clear message this project is too important to be lost or diminished simply due to a change of Government or MP.”
