Instructor Julie Walters says the relaxed and sociable classes in mornings and afternoons give people who had strokes, for instance, confidence and strength to lead a more active life.

Student Jacky McGeogh said: “I’m trying to get my balance back after a heart attack. It’s really working and I enjoy coming because the instructor makes it fun.”

Everyone is welcome and they are promised small classes which are suited to them and go at their pace. The sessions are very informal and friendly. Students enjoy the social element, meet new people and even make new friends.

Student Jacky McGeogh, 65, attends classes after a heart attack. She said: “I’m trying to get my balance back after a heart attack. It’s really working and I enjoy coming because the instructor makes it fun.”

Les Taylor, 88, had a slight stoke after the stress from his house flooding. He said: “I look forward to these classes every week. It’s nice to meet new people and I need to help my balance.”

New NHS funding has enabled Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust to expand the postural stability, strength and balance classes.

The free 12-week programme can be booked via 0300 456 1006. But it is best to speak with a health professional first. The organisers will liaise with your GP to check if the classes are right for you.
