It never rains (or snows) but it pours – so they say! Torbay and South Devon has again experienced a bout of extreme weather with much of the area covered in snow.

The directors of Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust would like to publicly thank staff, volunteers, patients and service users for their support during the extreme weather.

As of yesterday (Wednesday 21 March) all services, including outpatient appointments, have been running as normal.

Gary Hotine, On-call Director at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our staff for their tremendous support over the last few days. We’ve had staff stranded on site, working extra or longer shifts and battling through the snow and ice to get here. It’s entirely down to our dedicated staff and supporting army of volunteers that we have been able to keep our emergency services running.

“We have also now stood-down our volunteer 4×4 driver service and I’d like to say a special thank you to all of them, as well as our own estates staff, who have been driving the snow-covered roads of Devon. This has enabled our staff to get to and from work and ensured that our vulnerable patients in the community have been able to receive the essential care they needed. We’ve been blown away by your support and commitment and wereally can’t thank you all enough.

“We are mindful that we also owe a huge debt of thanks to all staff who were able to make their way in for their normal duties and to those who came in when they were not rostered for duty, or who worked extra hours to keep services running and cover for colleagues who were unable to get to work. Thank you all for your contribution.

“It really has been heart-warming seeing and hearing all the stories of how our staff, and our volunteers, have worked so hard to continue to provide our patients and services users with high quality care despite the challenging conditions!

“Finally, I must thank all of our patients and service users for their understanding during this time, especially anyone whose appointment has had to be postponed. We fully appreciate how frustrating and distressing this can be, and we would like to thank you for bearing with us. We are now working hard to re-book all appointments that were postponed due to the weather and we will ensure that all those affected have a new appointment date as soon as possible.”
