Local police have asked parents to think about what their children are doing in their free time, following reports of young people breaking into abandoned buildings locally.
Posting on social media, a spokesperson for
Brixham Police said: “Agencies are receiving repeated reports of young people entering abandoned buildings throughout Torbay, putting themselves and others at risk. This appears to be following the trend of urban exploration (often referred to as UE, urbex or roof & tunnel hacking). The trend began from people exploring abandoned ruins for photographs or historical interest. However, the behaviour being reported to Police & partner agencies amounts to nothing more than vandalism.
“Breaking into abandoned buildings is highly dangerous. Many are unstable with unsafe floors broken glass and exposed electrical wiring as well as entrapment hazards. There is the risk of exposure to asbestos as well as pigeon and other faeces. The health risks from exposure will not be seen now but many years in the future. There are ongoing reports of injuries and fatalities worldwide from this dangerous pastime. Also, the cost of constant repair and securing of these buildings, as well as insurance, can be prohibitive to owners of these sites.
“We ask parents to think about what their children are doing in their free time and, if they believe they are involved in this activity, to discuss the dangers with them. Please remember, although trespass is deemed a civil matter, burglary and other offences are criminal and will be dealt with accordingly.
“If you think people are accessing an abandoned building near you, please contact Torbay Council (https://orlo.uk/GzGPE) and the owner of the property. Any urgent issues, please contact the Police via the normal channels.”
