If you’ve ever been greeted by the soulful eyes of a dog who clearly heard the word “beach” through three closed doors, you know you’re in for an adventure. Luckily, Torbay offers a stunning selection of coastal spots where your four-legged friend can dig, paddle, and prance to their heart’s content — no need to pretend your dog is a seagull (or a cat as we saw recently in Torquay) to sneak them in.
Between 1 May and 30 September, dogs are not allowed on certain Torbay beaches. Pups must be on leads if you’re strolling along the promenades near those “dog-free” zones. Yes, even if your spaniel is more interested in sniffing sandwich wrappers than causing mayhem.
But never fear — there are plenty of beaches where dogs are welcome year-round, no questions asked.
Torbay’s Year-Round Dog-Friendly Beaches
Here’s the ultimate checklist for you and your sand-loving sidekick:
-Anstey’s Cove – Small, quiet, and great for dogs who prefer their beach with a side of seclusion and seaweed.
-Babbacombe Beach – Ideal for paddle-happy paws and people who enjoy a pebble massage underfoot.
-Beacon Cove – Just a short stroll from Torquay Harbour, perfect for a quick dip and doggy dash.
-Churston Cove – A hidden gem that feels like a secret club for dogs (and their humans).
-Elberry Cove – If your dog likes ruins and a bit of history with their sea breeze, this one’s got the vibes.
-Fairy Cove – Magical name, magical views, and occasionally magical amounts of mud.
-Fishcombe Cove – Calm waters and shady spots make this a canine favourite for mid-afternoon snoozes.
-Goodrington Sands – North Sands – Be sure to hit the north end — it’s doggo-approved all year long.
-Livermead Sands – Close to town, and good for dogs who like to show off their best sandy zoomies.
-Maidencombe Beach – Rural, rugged, and ripe for a good game of “find the biggest stick.”
-Meadfoot Beach – North Eastern Part Only – Just remember, it’s a tale of two halves: one for paws, one for pause.
-Oyster Cove – Small and stony, but big on charm (and squirrel-chasing opportunities en route).
-Peaked Tor Cove – Perfect for peaceful pooches who like a bit of solitude with their sea air.
-Saltern Cove – Rocky and raw, great for explorers who treat every rock pool like a mystery.
-Shoalstone Beach – A fun spot with salty character — don’t forget the towel!
-St Mary’s Bay – Expansive and scenic, this is the “long walk” kind of beach dreams are made of.
Whether your pup prefers splashing in the shallows, rolling in suspicious seaweed, or simply sitting and judging other dogs from a sunlit rock, Torbay’s got a beach for it. Just pack a lead, some poop bags, and perhaps a towel that you definitely don’t mind losing to the elements.
Torbay isn’t just the English Riviera — it’s the Canine Riviera too.
Now go fetch those walking boots. The sea (and the seagulls) await!
