The 20-year-old man, who was driving a green Volkswagen Polo, was flown to Derriford Hospital by air ambulance but later died as a result of his injuries.

He has been formally identified as Daniel John Foale from the Kingsbridge area. His family have been informed.

The 31-year-old female driver of the red Seat Ibiza, registered to Nottingham, and a four-month-old girl, were taken by ambulance to Torbay District Hospital. The woman suffered minor injuries and the child was uninjured.

The 41-year-old female driver of the green Mitsubishi Space Star, registered to Dartmouth, and a 13-year-old boy were treated at the scene.

The road was closed for eight hours while officers from the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit carried out a thorough investigation of the scene.

Sergeant Steve Walker, based in Plymouth, said: “We would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the green Volkswagen Polo being driven in the Woodlands area shortly before the collision. The car was travelling in the direction of Dartmouth, towards Totnes.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or has any information that could assist with the investigation, is asked to call Sergeant Steve Walker on 101, quoting reference 334 of 31 January.
