TDA’s Pop Up the High Street shop in Torquay, which opened on Saturday 29 August, has seen its tenants enjoy a fantastic first week of sales.
The four local businesses have experienced the many benefits of life on the high street in a prime location in Torbay. Meeting new customers, networking with the other business owners and increasing their exposure and publicity have been amongst the highlights.
Richard Haddock, Torbay Council’s Executive Lead for Business, said: “I was privileged enough to meet the first shop tenants during the launch event and it was great to see them get an opportunity like this in a striking, new shop in a great location.
“I strongly urge any businesses in Torbay that have a product which they sell online to take up this option to reach out to more customers and boost their potential to sell.”
The project is aimed at new businesses or those without a physical presence on the high street that would like the chance to experience what it takes to become a successful retailer.
The Coastal Communities Funded project, which is being delivered by TDA, has two elements. It will support the development of the high street through a Pop Up shop and provide business support direct to existing independent retailers across Torbay.
Kasia Boadle of Mytakeonpretty, one of the shops first tenants, said: “In the first four days of trading I made almost 200% more than I would sell via my usual channels and I’ve learnt so much working with the other retailers.”
“If local businesses are not sure about taking up the shop for whatever reason, I would say just do it anyway. Between signing the contract and the shop launch I managed to create enough stock and arrange child care. It can be done and these opportunities don’t come around often. All the hard work has been well worth it for the positive experience I’ve had and the business support and advice I’ve received.”
TQview, Stroppymoo and Fine & Dandy, the other tenants enjoying time in the Pop Up shop, have all exceeded their targets and are very pleased with the public reaction. The feedback from customers has shed new light on their businesses and given them fantastic inspiration to take their ideas in several new directions.
