15 park tennis courts officially opened to the public following renovations funded by UK Government, LTA Tennis Foundation and Torbay Council.
Part of biggest ever investment in parks tennis facilities across Britain, with millions going towards transforming over 2000 courts.
Residents can book a court near them through the LTA website.
Park tennis courts in Torbay officially reopened today, Monday 22 May after a £337,000 investment from the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation, and £167,000 funding provided from Torbay Council – demonstrating its commitment to investing in sport in Torbay.
15 tennis courts across Torbay, 5 located in Abbey Park (Torquay), 6 at Oldway Park (Paignton) and 4 in St Mary’s Park (Brixham) are set to reopen for booking via: https://www.lta.org.uk/play/
Through the Parks Tennis Project, the LTA is delivering the biggest ever investment in parks tennis facilities across Britain, which has been used to transform local tennis courts across all 3 of our towns, providing a significant boost to sporting facilities.
The courts have undergone extensive work to ensure viability for years to come, including resurfacing, repainting, new nets, and gate systems. This nationwide programme of investment is seeing thousands of existing park tennis courts in poor or unplayable condition brought back to life for the benefit of communities across the country, providing vital opportunities for children and adults to get active.
The new booking systems and gate access technology means it is now easier to get on a court by booking in advance to guarantee availability. All courts and sessions across Torbay will be available to book online via the LTA website and the dedicated Torbay booking system website https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/TorbayParksTennis and app.
Torbay Park Tennis offers an annual household season ticket for £35 allowing you and members of your household to play up to 10 hours a week for 12 months or an hourly charge of £6. The small fees will ensure that the courts are maintained at their new high standard for years to come.
The LTA and Torbay Council are currently seeking to appoint coaching providers. Once appointed they will work together to ensure free park tennis sessions are available on the courts, providing regular opportunities for anyone to pick up a racket and play.
Julie Porter, Chief Operating Officer at the LTA, said: “After months of hard work, we’re delighted to see park tennis courts across Torbay officially back open to the public, and in better shape than ever.
“Public tennis courts are such vital facilities for getting active and we want as many people as possible, of all ages and abilities, to pick up a racket and enjoy playing tennis. Thanks to this investment the sport will be opened up to more players, for years to come.”
Players using the courts at St Mary’s (Brixham) and Oldway (Paignton) will need to provide their own equipment. Anyone using the Abbey Park (Torquay) courts can hire equipment at Torre Abbey Leisure (the kiosk by the bowling club). Equipment hire fees are not included with court fees.
