Cerys Robinson, 8, will be competing in Rock Solid Stars Race next month to raise funds for Torquay’s Elite community gym.The event in Exeter is being held on the 19th March. The muddy 2km course will be full of obstacles. The race is open to 5-14 year olds. For more information about the event see: http://rocksolid.life/eventsfees/stars-exeter/
Cerys told us: “I really enjoy going to the gym and they’re really, really good at teaching people. I’m looking forward to getting muddy and wet in the Rock Solid Race, I think it’s going to be hard but I want to do it because my mum and dad have done it twice and they always say it’s fun. I thought of raising money for the gym because it needs more things in it and some of the things there are broken, but it’s a great place and I really like it.”
Cerys hopes to raise money for new equipment and to help maintain the gym, which is a non profit community project.
A spokesperson for Torquay’s Elite Community gym said:
“Torquay’s Elite Community Gym have been serving the local community within Barton and Hele Village for a couple of years now. The non profit gym is run by a group of volunteers whom dedicate their spare time by providing children, adolescents and adults, an opportunity to improve and/or maintain their health and fitness; all within a comfortable, relaxed and light hearted environment. An environment to which has helped gain additional gym users from across the bay. The volunteers pride themselves on helping the youth within the local area, and also engage with them at local community events, to ensure they know they have an option to attend a session at the gym during the week, even where their families may not be able to afford every session. They are dedicated to teaching youngsters in a positive, disciplined and fun way, but they also encourage and help them to engage and communicate effectively with others around them.
“Cerys has been a committed junior member for some time now and loves the sport of boxing. She is dedicated to her training each week, and has shown a great improvement within her confidence, skills and ability. Cerys with the full support of her parents Emma and Ben, asked to undertake a fund raiser to help the gym out, as some of the equipment needs to be replaced or fixed, due to it being previous donations and therefore it now requires some servicing to get back up and running. Cerys will be running the 2km RockSolid Stars Obstacle Race on the 19th March, and she has set herself a target of raising £1000.
“The volunteers at the gym and its members, are in awe of Cerys thoughtfulness and her pure act of kindness; as she at such a young age identified a community need and set out about trying to help ensure that when other children attend the gym, they will also have the opportunity to experience the training she has been able to have over the years. A wonderful character, and Torquay’s Elite Community Gym cannot thank Cerys and her family enough for their support, we wish her all the best for the race and appreciate every single donation she successfully gains along the way.”
