This July, Rowcroft Hospice celebrates ten years of The Sleep Walk — the charity’s all-female fundraising event where ladies and girls sparkle like the stars as they step out onto South Devon’s streets in a sponsored walk to raise vital funds to care for patients with life-limiting illnesses.
This year, the charity is unable to hold its usual mass participation event due to government restrictions, so instead Rowcroft is going that extra mile to set up ‘The Sleep Walk — Your Way’, where participants choose to walk for five or ten miles over the course of a week starting Saturday 4 July, at any time that suits them. Hundreds of participants are expected to take part, raising much-needed income for end-of-life patient care.
“The Sleep Walk is an annual highlight for Rowcroft, and it’s amazing that we’re celebrating our tenth Sleep Walk this year!” says Alexia Croft, Rowcroft’s Events Manager. “This event offers ladies and girls the chance to make special memories together, have lots of laughs with friends or family members, get some exercise and fresh air, and do something positive for our community.
As a participant of ‘The Sleep Walk — Your Way’, you can walk at any time that suits you, choosing any route, and if you want to walk in your onesie or PJs, then so much the better! It’s totally in your hands: all we ask is that you abide by social distancing guidelines, keep safe, have loads of fun making memories to last a life-time, and help us to raise some money for a really worthwhile cause.”
The charity is building an online Sleep Walk community at www.rowcroftsleepwalk.co.uk, and Sleep Walkers are being encouraged to inspire and motive each other by sharing their videos, photos, stories, and messages of support. Those with the strava app on their phones can link strava to their fundraising page, so that friends and families can track their progress daily.
“This is a new kind of community fundraising. It highlights our region’s strong sense of community spirit — that radiates like the sun to all corners of South Devon and beyond!” says Alexia. “The Sleep Walk — Your Way is about bringing women and girls together in spirit, uniting for a great cause, supporting and encouraging each other, and having loads of laughs along the way!
We’ll also show our solidarity with all the nurses and careworkers on the frontline, many of whom are women. And we’ll raise vital funds to care for people with life-limiting illnesses in our community. I really hope that as many ladies as possible will step forward to stride the streets in support of our community. Please join us if you can. Together we will make South Devon a little brighter!”
For those wishing to take part, there’s a £5 sign-up fee and Rowcroft is asking Sleep Walkers to either make a donation to Rowcroft, or commit to raising sponsorship. There’s no minimum age to sign up, and all participants will be awarded with a Sleep Walk medal.
Sponsored this year by Kitsons Solicitors, The Sleep Walk is Rowcroft’s flagship fundraising event, raising essential income to care for patients in their own homes across South Devon, and in Rowcroft’s Inpatient Unit in Torquay. Last year, more than 1600 female participants took part in The Sleep Walk, raising over £100,000. Over the previous nine years, funds raised total more than £1m.
