This month, the Samaritans South Devon branch based in Torquay is celebrating its 60th anniversary.
The branch commenced operation on 14 November, 1964 at the Vicarage at All Saints Church in Babbacombe. In 1971, the branch then moved to its current home in Warren Road.
Over the past 60 years, Samaritans South Devon is proud to have had almost 1,500 volunteers in total, dedicated to preventing suicide and providing life-changing support. This number includes Listening Volunteers who answer the phone to those in need, as well as Support Volunteers who help with the day-to-day running of the branch, raising awareness through publicity and outreach, fundraising and more.
To mark the 60th anniversary, the branch recently hosted a celebration event for volunteers past and present at the Headland Hotel in Torquay. During the event, some volunteers were presented with long service awards from Felicity Varah Harding OBE, Samaritans Ambassador, Honorary President and the daughter of Samaritans founder Chad Varah, and Keith Leslie, Chair of Samaritans UK and Republic of Ireland.

Our volunteers go above and beyond and many have been part of the branch for decades.
