Torbay Half Marathon – Get on track

The South Devon 10k is a feel good, community event promoting health, learning and raising money for local charities.

Organised by students and staff at South Devon College in association with South Devon Athletic Club, it is a real life learning experience for sports and public services students who will all have roles to play on the day, Saturday 16th May 2015, whether it’s marshalling, time keeping or being part of the race day communications team.

The event includes a 10 kilometre (6.2 mile) race through an area of outstanding natural beauty, a ¾ mile fun run and features lots of family fun activities. The start and finish point is at South Devon College’s main campus at Long Road, Paignton. The circular route takes runners into the beautiful South Hams countryside along little known bridle paths and farm tracks, right down to the Mill Pond at Stoke Gabriel.

The race charity is the Friends of South Devon College which works to support students affected by hardship and to enhance learning. It is an incredibly pretty and enjoyable route. Race organiser, Helen Honnor, explains:

“The course certainly has some challenging hills and previous runners have got quite muddy, but still said they absolutely loved it, with many returning to race this year. The event is a popular fixture on athletic club racing calendars whilst also attracting complete beginners, fun runners and walkers, some of whom take the opportunity to raise money for their chosen charity.”

Now in its sixth year, the event is a popular fixture on athletic club racing calendars whilst also attracting complete beginners, fun runners and walkers, some of whom take the opportunity to raise money for the race charity South Devon College Charitable Trust or indeed their preferred charity. With excellent feedback about the route and the organisation, the event has grown and we anticipate attracting a field of around 500 runners this year. The fun starts at 11:15, the 10k race starts at 12:00 noon. Entries on the day incur a £2 surcharge. 10k runners will receive a T-Shirt and goody bag and the fun runners receive a medal on completion.
