Caroline Voaden has responded to the government announcing a new review of the water industry, by calling for the regulator Ofwat to be replaced.
Yesterday, the government announced a new Independent Water Commission to deliver the biggest review of the industry since privatisation.
However the Liberal Democrats have called for more urgency in dealing with the sewage crisis, which plagues Britain’s coastlines, lakes and rivers.
Caroline Voaden spoke in parliament about the terrible situation in Kingsbridge, where residents are having to wade through sewage seeping out of the drains in heavy rain.
In what was the former Totnes constituency, there were more than 5,279 sewage spills last year alone, and in May, over 100 people fell ill in Brixham after an outbreak of the water parasite cryptosporidium.
Liberal Democrat MP for South Devon, Caroline Voaden said: “Whilst a review of the industry is welcome, it’s not going to solve many of the problems constituents in Kingsbridge and across South Devon are going to face this winter.
“What we need is far more urgency from the government if we’re to take the immediate steps necessary to reform our water industry.
“Even before this Commission begins, the government should be getting on with introducing a new regulator with real teeth and power to get hold of these profiteering firms.
“It is time to put an end to profit before the environment in the water industry and end this national scandal.”
