Torbay communities who want to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III this May with a street party are urged to start planning now.
The Coronation of King Charles III takes place on Saturday 6 May 2023, with many households and communities expected to mark this historic occasion.
The Coronation ceremony takes place at Westminster Abbey, where the King will be crowned alongside Camilla, The Queen Consort. Following the coronation there will be an extra bank holiday on Monday 8 May to allow people to celebrate this joyous event.
As part of plans announced by Buckingham Palace, on Sunday 7 May, neighbours and communities are invited to share food and fun together by taking part in The Coronation Big Lunch in a nationwide act of celebration and friendship. Council officers are exploring how they can bring communities together for The Coronation Big Lunch with further details expected to be announced over the coming weeks.
Anyone looking to hold a street party over the Coronation weekend on the public highway need to make sure they apply for their road closure.
Applications for road closures on ‘A’ roads or bus routes need to be made to the council at least three months in advance, meaning the deadline for applying is Saturday 11 February.
Road closure applications for all other roads, need to be made by no later than Saturday 8 April.
Community groups and residents who would like to hold a street party are encouraged to get together with their neighbours and local businesses to discuss plans to make sure everyone has the opportunity to be involved in the celebration.
Whilst there are no charges for road closures, residents will need the relevant road closed and diversion signs which can be hired from SWISCo for a fee.
Further details on how to organise a street party and apply for a street party road closure will be available on the council’s website from Monday 30 January. Information for groups wishing to hold an event on council land will also be able to make an application from Monday 30 January.
