Insect-based pet-food company Mr Bug, which makes planet-friendly nutritious treats for dogs all over the world, has won top prize in the Best Product of the Year category at the Global Good Awards 2023.
The Global Good Awards rewards businesses, NGOs, charities and social enterprises of all shapes and sizes that are blazing a trail for purpose-driven sustainability and ethical leadership.
Mr Bug is a pioneering insect farm in Exminster, Devon that breeds its own sustainable, nutrient-dense mealworms to produce high-quality healthy treats for pet pooches everywhere.
But it doesn’t stop there – Team Bug is determined to see this healthy, affordable and sustainable protein source move into human food consumption too.
Bug Boss Conal Cunningham said: “Mr Bug was founded with two core ideas at its heart. One, to produce the finest and most ethical mealworm protein right here on our farm in the Southwest. And two, to ensure sustainability was at the forefront of the mission.
“But our big idea extends far beyond healthier snacking for dogs. People are starting to realise there needs to be a new way of doing things that doesn’t impact the environment so much, and they’re beginning to see that bugs could be a really good source of protein for themselves and not just their dogs.”
As well as the sustainable profile of Mr Bug’s key ingredient, the judges at the Global Good Awards were also impressed by the company’s new-age farming methods, its championing of the circular economy and its ambitions to achieve meaningful world impact – especially as we’re headed for a global protein shortage thanks to population surges.
Conal added: “We’ve already won Ethical Accreditation with the Good Shopping Guide and a much-sought-after government-backed Farming Innovation Programme grant, so Gold at the Global Good Awards is the icing on the cake. It’s also important affirmation that we’re doing something right!
“This accolade will offer important reassurance to consumers, buyers and investors that they’ve backed the right horse – or bug.”
