Teignbridge Council Leader Alan Connett has responded to the weekend announcement of the imminent national lockdown, saying that the priority will continue to be protecting local communities and the most vulnerable.

He also said that the council will have to deal with the financial impact as best it can, and that it would be impossible to forecast the exact shortfall being faced until more information and analysis was available.

Cllr Connett said: “The financial position facing Teignbridge has been well reported and is highlighted at Executive again tomorrow.

“Tackling Covid19, while doing all we can to support and help our communities continues to be the priority for Teignbridge Council.

“No one has been here before, got the video, worn the T-shirt or written the book. We are where we are.

“The pandemic has taught us that we need to be flexible and adaptable to the situation informed by the evidence, trying our best to help our district through the situation, interpreting national guidance into meaningful actions to support local residents and communities.

“As Leader of Teignbridge Council, I want to work positively and constructively to secure the best health and economic outcomes for Teignbridge and across Devon.

“Our heartfelt thanks go to those in the NHS, care workers, home carers, the blue light services and so many more whom we will be relying on to help us through this next period.

“I also want to thank all our council staff for the commitment and hard work they have consistently been putting in since the first lockdown, and to also thank businesses and residents across the district. We can all appreciate the anxiety the new lockdown will be causing.”
