The benefits of being able to enjoy and exercise in local green spaces have been magnified by the impact of Covid -19 and residents living in Newton Abbot, Kingsteignton and Kingskerswell have the opportunity to suggest how Teignbridge District Council can make improvements through green investment.
Teignbridge District Council has launched a ‘Connecting to Nature’ project, seeking to identify areas of green space that could flourish if given the right support. The project is part of the major Garden Community programme which aims to transform Newton Abbot and the surrounding area, creating attractive, sustainable places to live and work.
Not only is the Council looking at where green investment might make an environmental difference but it is also looking at how different areas can be joined up so that people can escape the traffic and walk or cycle between them. And in doing so they expect to improve the local eco systems through allowing nature to prosper and wildlife to be supported via tree trails, wildlife verges and watercourses.
The project aims to improve wellbeing by ensuring there are local green spaces which people can enjoy.
An early step in the project is to ask local people via a short survey for their views, seeking to identify how to encourage people to use green spaces, find out where people currently go and to capture ideas on where green space can be created or improved.
Ideas discussed at a recent workshop included community crop growing, tree planting, community orchards or small-scale wood fuel production; dementia or sensory gardens and trails; or community gardens with edibles, flowers and art.
Local people are asked to complete the short survey by 15 February so that ideas can be evaluated and followed up.
