Tesco grants give big boost to young people across Teignbridge

Three good causes in Teignbridge received a welcome cash boost when community-conscious Tesco colleagues handed out grants worth £3,000.

Teignmouth Mutual Aid Community Larder was able to celebrate after receiving a cheque for £1,500, which will buy more nutritional food, fresh fruit and vegetables for those who find themselves in need.

Another establishment to receive funding was Decoy Community Primary School. It was awarded £1,000 to help toprovide designated space for work with pupils with special educational needs and disabilities, as well as those who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties.

The third good cause to be awarded funds was South Dartmoor Community College. It received £500, which will fund lessons about horticulture, animal care and improvingmental health.

The funding came from Tesco’s Stronger Starts scheme, in partnership with the charity Groundwork, which supportsmany Teignbridge community projects and good causes, giving away thousands of pounds.

Jackie Jackson, a founder of Teignmouth Mutual Aid Community Larder, said: “We’re thrilled to have won £1,500 from Tesco. We are supporting about 200 people, including children in Teignmouth, Bishopsteignton and Shaldon.

“We will use the donation to make our food packs healthier by adding fresh fruit and vegetables. We know that people need this because a tinned and dry food diet is just not good enough to keep people well and fit.

“Thank you so much to Tesco customers who chose us as their local cause and to Janette Parker, Tesco’s Community Champion in Newton Abbot, for her support.”

Teignmouth Mutual Aid Community Larder began during lockdown as a foodbank charity providing food for families and individuals who need it in Teignmouth.

Janette Parker, community champion at Tesco’s Newton Abbot Superstore, said: “We’re delighted that we can help groups and clubs across Teignbridge.

“Stronger Starts invites our customers to use their blue tokens to vote for local schemes they feel will benefit children and young people, and it’s so good to see the impact that the funding makes.”

Teignbridge shoppers can support local school and children’s groups by dropping the Tesco blue token they receive at checkout into the relevant voting box as they leave the store.
