The announcement was made tonight at 8 pm in a public address to the nation.

The lockdown, much like the first lockdown will see schools closed and people only allowed to leave their house for essential reasons.

– Shopping for necessities
– Any medical need, or to provide care
– Exercise a day (ideally once a day and locally)
– Travelling to and from work, if work cannot be done from home, such as construction and keyworkers.

Unlike schools and colleges, nurseries will stay open. The Prime Minister stated schools would be looking to reopen after February half-term.

This is the third lockdown for England, the second started on November 5 and ended December 2.

There have been 2,713,563 coronavirus cases in the UK, up 58,784 from yesterday.

It was announced earlier this afternoon that Scotland would enter lockdown at Midnight. All Schools in Scotland will remain shut until at least 1 February – a decision Nicola Sturgeon says was the “most difficult” one of all.

Wales has been in Level 4 lockdown restrictions have been in place since Sunday, December 20. The Welsh Government announced earlier this evening that all schools and colleges in Wales will move to online learning until January 18.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
