Torbay Council introduces ‘Work Out to Help Out’ scheme – will your street be chosen?

This month Torbay Council launches ‘Work Out to Help Out’ which will see local communities receive free passes to a number of leisure facilities across the Bay.

Developed as part of the council’s continued commitment to promoting sports and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. ‘Work Out to Help Out’ aims to help get residents ‘back on their feet’ and keep up with the healthy, active habits that many started when exercising was one of the only permitted reasons to leave home back at the start of the global pandemic.

Each month a local street will be chosen at random. Residents living in that street will then be offered access to free gym memberships, fitness classes, swimming sessions, Velopark rides and many other opportunities at local sports facilities.

The overall aim of the scheme is to encourage Torbay residents to become more active and perhaps try out a new fitness activity.

Organised in collaboration with Sport Torbay, the initiative will start this November and will run for 12 months. Postcards will be dropped through the letterboxes of the chosen street, with winning streets also being announced on the Torbay Council and Torbay Sports social media channels at the start of each month. All resident’s living on the chosen streets needs to do is take their invitation to the chosen facility, along with proof of their address – they then get to enjoy their prize for one month free of charge.

Work Out to Help Out is the latest scheme back by a £150,000 investment by Torbay Council to support sport and physical activity across the Bay. Last month a number of local sports clubs benefitted from financial support from the Back to Sport grant, with further support being given to elite local athletes from the Believe to Achieve grant.

Cllr Steve Darling, Leader of Torbay Council, said; “We are absolutely committed to supporting our local communities with getting fit, staying fit and ultimately improving their overall health and wellbeing. Work Out to Help Out will give lots of local people the opportunity to try a new sporting activity for free for an entire month – and perhaps after even keep up with their new healthy habit.”

Cllr Mike Morey, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Environment and Culture, Torbay Council, said; This is a fun and hopefully inspiring initiative to encourage local residents to support the Bays sports and leisure facilities. There is a lot of research to show just how important exercise is for people’s mental and physical wellbeing, which is why we have invested £150,000 into sport in Torbay. Keep an eye on your doormat to see if you’re street becomes one of Torbay’s most active streets.”

Work Out to Help Out terms and conditions – All applicants must meet the following criteria:

§ The participant must live in the street chosen in the month joined and have proof of residence.
