At the request of the Devon Ambassadors of The War Horse Memorial, Torbay Council will be raising and flying the International War Animal Day Flag from Torquay Town Hall and holding a one-minute silence at 11am.
The Worshipful The Mayor of Torbay, Cllr Mark Spacagna will be leading the tribute, with Rev Sam from St Mary Mags Church also marking the moment of remembrance and reflection.
International War Animal Day honours all animals that have served in wars and those that are still providing dedication in wars such as Ukraine, Israel, and other countries around the world.
This year is the first year that the UK marks International War Animal Day and will be joining five other countries including Australia, New Zealand, America, Canada, and France in recognising the part that animals have played in wars and conflict.
Kirk and Hannah Petrakis, Devon Ambassadors for The War Horse Memorial, and owners of the much-loved Patrick the Therapy Pony, have been working with Council officers on the arrangements. Together with Patrick they will be in attendance on the day.
Cllr Mark Spacagna, The Worshipful The Mayor of Torbay, said; “Torbay Council is proud to support the first UK International War Animal Day on Saturday 24 February.
“Together with the Devon Ambassadors for The War Horse Memorial we will be taking a moment to reflect, remember, and recognise the animals who throughout history have served, and who continue to serve alongside their human counterparts.
“Members of the community are welcome to attend the short event which will be taking place outside of Torquay Town Hall.”
Saturday 24 February also marks the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Torbay Communities in partnership with the Ukrainian community, partners, and Torbay Council will be hosting a Memorial service to mark the second anniversary. The Memorial service is open to members of the public and takes place at Upton Vale Church, St Marychurch Road, Torquay, TQ1 3HY on Saturday 24 February between 12pm and 3pm.
