There will be a spring in the step of thousands of runners when theTorbay Half Marathon and 10k returns to The English Riviera next autumn on Sunday 21st September.
A record number of almost 3,000 entrants of all abilities from across the UK had signed up take part in the 2024 event, set against the spectacular coastal backdrop of Torbay and Paignton, before it was unfortunately cancelled due to stormy weather conditions.
Hundreds of people have already entered either the half marathon or 10k distance, in a huge demonstration of support for the 2025 event, which was first staged more than thirty years ago in 1992. And around 20% are from postcodes outside Devon, confirming asignificant boost is in store for the regional economy.
One of the early entrants is Darren Pickett from Shrewsbury, who said, “I came to Torbay with my family to take part this year, and although the event understandably had to be cancelled because of the storm, we had a great time in Devon. We had no hesitation in signing up for next year and we’ll make a weekend of it.”
The Mercure and Ibis Styles hotels, which overlook Paignton Green, have been announced as the Official Event Hotels, and are perfectly located for entrants seeking a convenient overnight stay.
There will be many different reasons for participating, but hundreds will take part to raise much needed funds for local, regional and national charities as they aim to complete their half marathon or 10k challenge,
In recognition of the support of Torbay Athletic Club, who have been enthusiastic supporters in helping to bring the event back to the region, a special trophy will be awarded to the fastest male and female runners who reside in the Torbay postcode area.
The Kitson Boyce Team Challenge, where groups are invited tocompete to run the fastest combined time, means there will be healthy competition amongst local businesses, with a donation to charity also being facilitated for the triumphant teams. Only a minimum of four participants are required for a group to qualify for the team challenge.
Suzi Cumberland, Managing Director of event organisers Taurus Events said, “We have moved on from the disappointment of earlier this year, and are focusing our efforts on delivering a memorable event in a fantastic location. It has been really encouraging to receive so much support for the Torbay Half Marathon and 10k.”
Both events start and finish by the sea on Paignton Green and participants will take in some of the spectacular South Devon coastline on the English Riviera.
