As part of National Apprenticeship Week, which runs from 4-8 March, Torbay’s new Apprenticeship Working Group introduces the #ApprenticeTakeover.
Across Torbay, businesses are joining in National Apprenticeship Week by celebrating apprenticeships and letting their apprentice take over the business for the day.
#ApprenticeTakeover is designed to encourage businesses to engage with National Apprenticeship Week and find out more about the benefits of apprenticeships.
Rebecca Davies, TDA Senior Economic Development Officer and Chair of the Apprenticeship Working Group, said: “We’re challenging businesses to take part in National Apprenticeship Week and to join the #ApprenticeTakeover on social media, it’s a fun and engaging way to showcase their apprentice’s talent!
“We’d like to see more companies and organisations across all sectors give their apprentices the opportunity to showcase their talent, put them in the driving seat and let them take centre stage. It would be great to see an apprentice as Head Chef for the day, an apprentice as CEO, an apprentice leading a sales meeting, or an apprentice running an event.”
As part of the takeover, the Torbay Business Forum Breakfast on Tuesday 5 March and the Torbay Jobs Fair on Friday 8 March will be taken over by South Devon College, Torbay Council and TDA apprentices.

Steve Reynolds, Chair of Torbay Business Forum, said: “We’re delighted to be taking part in the #ApprenticeTakeover. It will give local apprentices the opportunity to manage a real business networking event and be part of the show!”
“TDA will be running a free information seminar on 8 March at the Riviera International Conference Centre, which is an event for businesses to engage, inform and inspire. Working Group partners will present the benefits of apprentices and what businesses need to do to have an apprentice, addressing issues and myth busting.”
The Apprenticeship Working Group partners are TDA, South Devon College, Devon & Cornwall Training Provider Network, Torbay Business Forum and SERCO (the Heart of the South West LEP’s Apprenticeship Service, Skills Support for the Workforce Programme).
The co-ordinated activity for National Apprenticeship Week is closely linked with the Government’s ‘Opportunities Through Apprenticeships’ pilot scheme, which Torbay was selected to take part in.
Carl Wyard, Economy and Enterprise Manager for TDA, said: “Apprenticeships offer a great way for our business community to grow; bringing in new skills or developing existing staff skills can yield dividend to a company’s bottom line. It’s also a great way for people in or out of work to develop their skills and their career. TDA is working with local partners to deliver this campaign during National Apprenticeship Week. Our aim is to bring communities, employers and training providers together to increase both the number and value of apprenticeships.”
The theme for the 12th annual National Apprenticeship Week is: ‘Blaze a Trail’. Through this theme, the Department for Education want to showcase how apprenticeships bring new energy and passion into businesses. Apprenticeships are a great path for people at any stage of their career from those starting out, to those re-entering the workforce, or those wanting to reskill or change careers.
