Liberal Democrat MP for Torbay, Steve Darling has backed a motion in Parliament calling on the government to block the closure of Paignton post office.
It comes as the Post Office announced last month that 115 post offices are at risk of closure, including Paignton’s town centre branch.
The news has been met with a fierce backlash by local residents.
Following the news, local MP Steve Darling has sponsored a motion in Parliament calling on the closures to be stopped and urged the government to back it. Steve said the planned closure “cannot be allowed to go ahead”.
Steve added: “I have already heard from countless people in Paignton who are extremely upset about the planned closure to the town centre’s post office and I will be fighting these plans every step of the way.
“Post offices are right at the heart of our communities and need to be protected. Without them we risk people losing access to local services and feeling further isolated, a challenge that older people will feel most acutely.
“If this closure is allowed to go ahead, it will be a massive blow to the town’s already-struggling town centre.
“This planned closure cannot be allowed to go ahead and for people in Paignton to be left without a vital service.”
