Torbay’s Liberal Democrat MP, Steve Darling, is spearheading a campaign to secure £350 million in funding for Torbay Hospital.
The hospital funding was pledged by the previous Conservative government but is now under “review” by the new Labour government.
Steve and the local Liberal Democrats have produced 1000 postcards highlighting the poor condition of the hospital and urging Health Secretary, Wes Streeting MP, to release the funds. Local residents are invited to add their name to the postcards and post them to the Health Secretary.
“The previous Conservative government let us down when it merely ‘pledged’ rather than allocated this badly needed funding,” said Steve. “Now this new Labour government looks like it might be set to let down Torbay too. I am asking 1000 local residents to put their names on our pre-prepared postcards and pop it in the post. This will give Wes Streeting a thousand reasons why Torbay Hospital needs this funding now!”
The postcards cite startling accounts of sewage leaks, poor ventilation, and a case where a staff member caught tuberculosis from a body in the morgue. 80% of the Hospital Estate has been deemed to be in a poor or unsatisfactory condition.
Over a hundred of the postcards have already been completed by members of the public after Steve and a team of volunteers from the Lib Dems handed some out on Saturday afternoon. They plan to distribute more over the coming days.
