Torbay town centres prepare for safe reopening

Torbay Council and TDA are preparing to safely welcome shoppers back to Torbay high streets.

On Monday 15 June, non-essential retailers will be allowed to reopen for the first time since the end of March.

Temporary changes are being put in place to ensure that the town centres can reopen and allow people to visit and use them in a responsible way.

Councillor Swithin Long, Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration, Tourism and Housing, Torbay Council, said: “It is vitally important for businesses in Torbay and the local economy that our town centres reopen. We are doing everything we can to support the community in their visits to town centres and precincts across Torbay. The experience of being in town centres will be different and, working with partners, we aim to make the experience as positive as possible. We want everyone to feel confident that our towns can be visited and to gently encourage customers back.

“Businesses will have social distancing measures in place to ensure the safety of shoppers. Teams across the Council and TDA are working together to help businesses restart safely using a tool kit they have developed.”

Signage will be in place to support social distancing and to encourage people to use the town centres responsibly. This will be visible in car parks, on the high street and in shops.

Local businesses are also receiving advice and guidance on how to reopen safely, following national guidelines. The Better Business for All Tool Kit helps guide businesses on how to restart safely.

This project has received funding from the England European Regional Development Fund as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020.
