Torquay Comedy Club is back and we went along to their “Welcome Back Extravaganza” at the Grand Hotel on Friday 7 April.
We were expecting a good night and it didn’t disappoint.
It’s great to see these events back in Torquay… and it’s great to be back out properly at a comedy night in our own town post covid. The last comedy show we went to was in London at the Palladium, this night out was considerably cheaper and travel time was far less!
The venue, The Grand Hotel is perfect, looks good, nice atmosphere. Most importantly, there’s a bar. It’s been a while, no kids. Definitely making the most of a much deserved night off!
Finding our seats, we spot someone we know in the front row. Great seats we think. Although my envy quicky subsides realising we are at a comedy night and he’s either going to either have the best view or become a sitting target. If you attended the evening. It was the latter. It was Craig.
The comedy started as soon as we sat down. We seem to have booked seats between a group of friends. As they conversed over us, we offered to swap. They declined. The conversing over us continued, then the passing of drinks, then when they couldn’t hear each other, we were passing on messages. Whilst we waited for someone to reveal we’d been pranked, the show started.
Hosting the evening was Luke Honnoraty – Great audience interaction, clearly experienced and knows how to getting everyone ready for the main event.
Up that evening were, Roger Monkhouse, Eva Bindeman (replacing Suzy Bennett) and Lloyd Griffith. All great quality acts, popular on the comedy circuit.
Torquay Comedy Club has drawn in some big names in the past. The late great Sean Lock and Jason Mansford (unfortunately these events were affected by Covid and Sean having to cancel shows).
Things we learnt this evening: If you don’t want trick or treaters, graffiti your own door with “peado”, men all leave home for uni with the same bed set, there are many types of tape and we heard EVERY impression of them and everyone has an inner chav (Craig. And I won’t mention county lines…)
We also learnt Stiflers mum is a local. She also likes to heckle. A lot. By the last act, it was time to forget Craig who’d been targeted by every comedian (that front row not looking so tempting now!) It was now all about Stiflers mum… who just couldn’t contain herself. I wonder if there had been another act if she’d have made it through to the end before being carted off. Amusing for us, maybe not so much for Lloyd Griffith. Thankfully, he’s quick-witted enough to deal with it. At least its given him some content for future shows.
The next show is already fully booked, a great sign! If you’re interested in the June show, tickets will sell out, so be quick.
