Princess Gardens War Memorial is currently undergoing essential cleaning and repair work.
On Monday 2 September work started to clean and repair the War Memorial in Princess Gardens along Torquay’s seafront.
The works, which are due for completion in time for Remembrance Day aim to preserve the memorial’s historical significance to ensure it remains a dignified tribute to those who have served and sacrificed.
The project is funded by the Big Wheel Fund, a donation made by the Mellors Group, the owners and operators of the English Riviera Wheel.
During the works, the memorial will be robustly segregated to ensure the safety of both the contractors and the public. Behind the protective boarding and scaffolding, specialist contractors will be cleaning the stone, carrying out localised repairs and repointing. Some gilding and cleaning of the metalwork will also be taking place.
Cllr Jackie Thomas, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Culture & Events and Corporate Services, Torbay Council, said; “All year round the War Memorial in Princess Gardens serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifices made by our servicemen and women. This work will ensure our communities heritage is carefully restored and preserved.”
James Mellors, Director at Mellors Group, said; “Princess Gardens is a special place for us and our annual English Riviera Wheel attraction. We are proud to contribute a substantial donation towards the conservation of this important War Memorial to ensure it continues to be a focal point for remembrance and reflection for many more years.”
The restored War Memorial will be at the centre of Torquay’s Remembrance Day service which is scheduled to take place on Sunday 10 November. Further details will be issued in due course.
The last day to enjoy the English Riviera Wheel for the 2024 season is Sunday 8 September. The English Riviera Wheel is expected to return in 2025 for the 12th year.
