In just one week, over 1,300 applications have been received by Teignbridge District Council (TDC), which is processing requests made through an online form on the council’s website: www.teignbridge.gov.uk/covid19grantapplication

The council has adopted new software to help staff process requests as it gears up for applications to continue rising.

A spokesman for TDC warned business owners to beware of firms offering to submit grant requests in return for a fee of around £100. “There is no need to pay someone else to apply on your behalf. You can easily do it yourself on our easy online form, which is supported by an explanatory video,” said the spokesman.

Government measures to support businesses suffering from financial difficulties caused by the pandemic include the Small Business Grant Fund and the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant.

These schemes will provide cash grants to eligible firms such as:

Any business currently receiving Small Business Rate Relief and Rural Rates Relief may be eligible for a £10,000 cash grant.

Any retail, hospitality or leisure business eligible for Expanded Retail Relief with a rateable value of £15,000 or below may be eligible for a £10,000 cash grant.

Any retail, hospitality or leisure business eligible for Expanded Retail Relief with a rateable value between £15,001 and £50,999 may be eligible for a £25,000 cash grant.

Any Teignbridge District Council business ratepayer that falls into any of the categories above can apply online. Anyone unable to complete the webform can contact TDC on 01626 361101.

Some businesses will not be eligible, for example:

If they are not ratepayers to TDC on the business rates system.

Properties in the valuation list that are for personal use; also car parks and parking spaces.

Businesses eligible for Expanded Retail Discount (which covers retail, hospitality and leisure) with a rateable value of £51,000 or over.

TDC is doing all it can to help businesses that are struggling due to the impact of the lockdown regulations caused by the Coronavirus outbreak.

The council is publishing a regular newsletter containing the latest information for businesses and there is lots of advice and the latest guidance on the Business section of the TDC website: https://www.teignbridge.gov.uk/business/

Anyone not already receiving the TDC Business Brief newsletter, can sign up at https://www.teignbridge.gov.uk/businessbrief
