People across Devon are being reminded it’s not too late to have the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
More than thirteen thousand people across Devon are not fully vaccinated more than twelve weeks after their first dose. They include over seven and a half thousand people who initially had a first dose of the Astra Zeneca vaccine.
A study funded by Public Health England found that having only one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine gives around 30% protection against the predominant Delta variant but protection rises substantially after a second dose.
Where can I have my second Astra Zeneca dose?
An Astra Zeneca clinic for second doses is being run at Barnstaple Leisure Centre on Monday 27th September and can be booked via the National Booking System online or by calling 119 and a pop up clinic is being held on 23 and 30 September at Frankfort Gate in Plymouth.
First doses being given at vaccine sites across Devon are of Moderna or Pfizer, in line with national guidelines on the most appropriate vaccine for different age groups, however there are still plenty of places where people can have their second dose of the Astra Zeneca vaccine.
Darryn Allcorn, NHS Devon Clinical Commissioning Group’s Chief Nurse said, “It is vital to have both doses of the vaccine to get maximum protection from Covid-19 and Long Covid. It not only helps to protect you but it also helps to support the NHS and can reduce the time others have to wait for surgery. For every inpatient with Covid in Devon, on average, 8 elective procedures such as hip or knee replacements have to be postponed.”
Carers who would like to have their Covid-19 vaccination but cannot leave those that they care for can access help through the Devon Vaccine Support Team at d-ccg.devonvaccinationsupport@nhs.net or by calling 01752 398836 The team can also assist people who aren’t registered with a GP and can’t book through the National Booking Service.
People who have not yet had a first dose of the vaccine can find their nearest walk-in clinic on NHS England’s site finder here or booked via the National Booking System online or by calling 119. Details of walk in clinics are also shared on NHS Devon CCG’s social media pages.
