Police in Kingsbridge have warned businesses about ‘Ringing the changes’ scam after recent incidents in the area.

Kingsbridge Police said on Social media:
“There have been incidents of ‘Ringing the changes’ taking place in the area over the weekend. This is where somebody tries to change large amounts of cash into smaller denominations, and in doing so confuses the shopkeeper into handing over too much change. Sometimes this can amount to hundreds of pounds.

“We would advise all shop staff and those handling cash to use discretion when changing money. For example, changing a £2 coin for smaller amounts for a car park machine is fine, but anything larger could be an attempt to confuse and should be refused,”

If you are suspicious of anybody who you think may be trying to do this then please gather as much information about them as possible and call 101, or 999 in an emergency.
