Pop Up Shop to celebrate its first birthday

The Pop up Shop is celebrating its first birthday on Saturday 27 August, reflecting on the major successes of its inaugural year on the Torquay High Street.

Torbay’s Executive Lead for Business, Cllr Richard Haddock, said: “The Pop up Shop has a lot to celebrate after one year on the high street. It has delivered valued support to local businesses and given them the opportunity to experience life as a high street retailer. It has been great to see businesses that have relished the opportunity and gone on to take up their own premises across Torbay and South Devon.”

To date, Pop up the High Street has given over 30 retailers the opportunity to interact with customers on a personal, one-to-one level, receive valuable feedback and gain a better understanding of their target markets. A total of 6 have gone on to open their own shop.

The project is aimed at new businesses or those without a physical presence on the high street that would like the chance to experience what it takes to become a successful retailer.
In addition to the retail space, each tenant is offered free business support and advice from Business Advisor Liz Edwards whilst retailing in the Pop up Shop.

Liz Edwards said: “We have seen a fantastic range of retailers in the shop and each tenant has gained valuable knowledge from their experience. I am extremely proud of the success of the project and look forward to working with more independent retailers across the year to help explore and realise their retail potential.

“The birthday event gives past retailers and partners involved in the project a chance to get together and celebrate the project’s achievements and its influence on high street regeneration. If you haven’t been to the shop before we would urge you to come along to take a look at what’s on offer and enjoy some birthday cake.”

Pop up the High Street, which is located in Union Street Torquay, offers independent retailers in Torbay the chance to experience life on the high street for just £30 a week. This provides home businesses or companies with an online presence the opportunity to have a ‘real world’ physical retail space, without the expensive overheads or risk.
